GSP - No Strength and Conditioning Training?

I found an interesting post today about Georges St. Pierre, in which GSP says that he does not train strength and conditioning for his fights.  My own opinion from knowing and training with martial artists and grapplers for several years, is that GSP is right, but misleading at the same time.  He says that he only lifts weights he make himself look his best, so he is more marketable.  I would agree with this, weights alone will do very little to help you in MMA unless do a ton of reps as well.  GSP says that he does some exercises to build explosive power, which really is the same as lifting weights, but with a variety of excersizes built in.  However, if GSP means that he does not train in conditioning to prevent gassing out in a match, it's complete B.S.  Every fighter I've ever known personally does some type of MMA oriented cardio, such as water exercises, or stairs, or dog laps.

Bobby Lashley - Hospitalized?

There has been a lot of talk after Bobby Lashley lost his first MMA match against Chad Griggs.  At first, the rumor was that Lashley was taken to the hospital not long after the fight for a laceration above his left eye.  This morning, reports from Strikeforce were saying that he indeed was taken to the hospital, but it was from severe dehydration.  They said that overnight he was given several bags of IV fluids to help him rehydrate, and was released this morning.  I'm wondering how much of his dehydration was from the stand-up, and how much of it was from trying to cut too much weight in too short a time frame before the fight??

UFC - printable *crap* Fight Card

So I saw on the UFC.com website today, that they have a nice looking printable fight card posted for most recent UFC's!!  I thought, great, they see people doing their own and realized they could improve people's enjoyment of the fights.  Then I actually printed it out.  I tried again and again and again, but it just does NOT print out nicely.  One way or another, a fighter's picture gets chopped off.  NICE.  NICE JOB!

Bobby Lashley - The Black Lesner?

Bobby Lashley's next fight in Strikeforce will again be against less than top-tier competition, Chad Griggs.  While you need to respect Lashley for not following Brock's lead and going straight to the UFC, and taking the biggest fights possible, but rather building himself up with real experience, sooner or later we all expect him to start taking on some real challenges.  To Griggs credit, he does have a plan for beating Lashley - get Lashley nice and tired from beating on him, then submit him.  Well, not exactly, but you know the result is pretty much the same.

UFC Fight Night 22

I didn't even realize until today that Fight Night 22 is coming up very soon after UFC 118!  It'll be here on Sept. 15th, and it was supposed to have Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman headlining.  Unfortunately, Mac had to pull out of the fight due to a chest injury.  I'm sure a huge number of people, myself included, were looking forward to this rematch.  If you'll recall, Danzig lost against Wiman at UFC 115 due to a very controversial call, where the ref called it a technical submission, without Danzig tapping or getting put to sleep.  With even more anticipation, will this fight now make it to a main card on a full UFC?

Expected card for UFC 122

So far, the supposed inside information as to the fights arranged for UFC 122 has the Fight Card looking something like this:

- Amir Sadollah vs. Peter Sobotta
- Goran Reljic vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
- Pascal Krauss vs. TBA
- Dennis Siver vs. TBA
- Kris McCray vs. TBA

Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson on Twitter

I've been very amused lately with what Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson have been posting back and forth to twitter.  Lots of talk from Shane Carwin, but nothing about steroids, of course:

"Just woke up and was reading the mma news websites and only one had real news ufc champ shane carwin steroids court case... I am surprised that athletes in mma do steroids ;( that explains body types"  -Roy Nelson

"I love Roy Nelson trying to elevate his status by talking smacks. Hopefully he is doing so on a treadmil. Some have rolls he has a bakery."  -Shane Carwin

"you are wrong. I was a spectator that night and he flipped me off. Plus if he wants his second loss in the UFC ill give it to him"  -Shane Carwin

"I just read big nog is out, so after I get knee surgery, we both can give the fans a show of heart, and great jits, and the next title shot after that."  -Roy Nelson

"Going to hospital for surgery today, video blog coming later... This is the hospital bed I am in right now... Here is me in my sexy gown, thank u for all the prayers"  -Roy Nelson

PPV buys for UFC 117

The UFC has some early working PPV numbers for UFC 117, nothing official of course, but they are looking lower than expected.  Sure, with Anderson Silva headlining this past UFC, outstanding numbers weren't expected, but matching him with Chael Sonnen was supposed to boost PPV buys a lot.  Maybe, now that its more and more apparent that Chael's loud loud mouth didn't gain him fans OR PPV buys, he'll try a better strategy =)

UFC 119

Another fighter has now dropped off the card for UFC 119.  Aaron Riley is out of the fight against the undefeated Pat Audinwood. Thiago Tavares will now be stepping in on short notice to fight against Audinwood.

The top Main Card fight of UFC 121 in Anaheim California has finally been confirmed as Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez.  The other Main Card fights are going to be:

Martin Kampmann vs. Jake Shields
Paulo Thiago vs. Diego Sanchez
Tito Ortiz vs. Matt Hamill
Brendan Schaub vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

Big Nog out of the Mir fight

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is officially out of the main card fight against Frank Mir at UFC 119.  Sources close to the fighter say that he suffered an injury during training that will require surgery.  Nogueira will likely be out until next year, so Mirko Cro-Cop Filipovic will take his spot on the main card against Mir.

Shane Carwin named in a steroids scandal

A recent arrest of a pharmacist in Alabama has drawn a number of athletes into the mud with him, including Shane Carwin.  Of course, there still is no evidence at all that Shane Carwin used steroids, but some of the prescribed steroids were definitely intended for his use.

UFC: Welcome to Ontario!

Late news today reports that Ontario is now set to sanction legalized MMA matches, beginning in 2011.  The UFC has been pushing for several years now to get MMA legalized in Ontario, seeing that Toronto alone could be a huge venue and draw bigger crowds than many locations.  Up to now, the government in Ontario has put regulating MMA on the back burner, saying that safety and regulation issues would need to be worked out first.  As always, money talks and they have quickly pushed through the laws needed, realizing how far 6 million in taxes could go.  Look for an announcement by the UFC, as soon as they can get the details worked out, for GSP to be headlining a UFC event in Toronto!

Ben Saunders - Cut

On his Facebook page today, Ben 'Killa Bee' Saunders announced that he has officially been cut by the UFC.  His latest decision loss to Dennis Hallman marked a multiple fight losing streak, although he has looked better in his last 2 fights.  Ben says that he will go and work hard on his ground game, and be back in the UFC soon.

Batista versus Lashley - this time NOT in WWE

Bobby Lashley, former WWE star, has changed his mind somewhat about a fight proposed by many fans, against another from WWE star, David Bastista.  While it is a match that will start people talking, both positive and negative, it is not a match that is technically interesting.  Take any 2 fighters that will likely use very very similar fighting styles, and what do you get? Crickets chirping.  Sure, you may have a quick knockdown, a quick submission, a quick knockout.  Maybe they will beat each other into dirt for all 3 rounds, and await a decision.  Either way, the only thing that will get people talking is the unexpected.

Gina Curano

Randy Couture, who has been the lead trainer for Gina Curano in the past, made a comment about her future in a recent interview.  He said that, given both her loss to Cyborg, and the success of her upcoming movie with big name actors, that Gina may forgo fighting towards a rematch completely.  Randy said that he has not seen Gina train, or even been in contact with her in 9 months.

Does Chael Sonnen stand a chance?

Obviously, everyone has a chance, otherwise the fight wouldn't be worth paying for.  And Chael probably will fare the best of all recent fighters to take on Anderson Silva.  But what do the odds really stand at?  Our best indicator is probably the betting odds, which are no doubt inflated to Sonnen's favor due to the amount of trash talk lately.  The highest percentage chance I've seen a gambling site have for Sonnen so far was a 22.5% chance of him winning.  The Lowest, you ask?  11% chance =)

GSP. vs. Koscheck

The rematch coming up in December of GSP against Josh Koscheck will not happen in Pittsburgh, as was seemingly more and more likely.  However, Dana White just released a statement that "Pittsburgh just didn’t feel quite big-time enough" for this match.  Originally, GSP stated his desire to have this fight happen in Montreal, and it seemed possible that the UFC might try to market this fight as it's first Ontario venue.  However, when that fell through (or became very unlikely to occur in time)  Josh Kocheck stated he would like to have in Pittsburgh, which seemed a suitable alternate venue.

Chael Sonnen

The amount of trash talk coming from Chael Sonnen is nothing short of amazing.  Despite going head to head against a fighter almost no one expects him to beat, his trash talk virtually never stops.  Just imagine what would happen if there was no trash talk - people would only be comparing his skills to that of Silva

UFC 118 - Another Fight Card change

First off, Alessio Sakara has been forced out of his fight against Gerald Harris due to a knee injury. Yes, Gerald Harris himself being a replacement for Jorge Rivera, will now face Joe Vedepo.  Also off the card is Terry Etim, who was set to face Joe Lauzon, is out with a broken rib.  Joe will now face Gabe "Godzilla" Ruediger, which doesn't seem anywheres near as interesting of a fight.

UFC cracks down on PPV pirates

"According to a report by newteevee.com Ustream.com has complied with a request by UFC parent company Zuffa LLC to hand over the Internet protocol addresses of members who broadcasted the promotion's events via the popular Internet streaming site.
Last week, Zuffa subpoenaed both Ustream and Justin.tv, demanding that both sites provide them with the IP addresses of individuals whom it says, quite simply, are infringing on its intellectual property rights."

Ouch, looks like I need to be careful next time =)

UFC 118 loses a main card

The official word from Dana White is that the Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares fight, which was scheduled to happen at UFC 118, has been pushed to UFC Fight Night 22 as the Main Event.  Where does that leave the card for UFC 118, since this fight was a main card event, and UFC officials have not declared any possible replacements for the vacant spot.

Paul Daley - signing with Strikeforce

News is in that Paul Daley has unofficially signed with Strikeforce for a 6-fight deal.  After a number of rumors about where Daley will ultimately end up, it looks like Daley's first fight is almost ready to be inked, with Daley likely fighting in September.  In case you don't remember, Daley was previously cut from the UFC's roster, or ejected from the UFC rather, for a punch in the fight against Josh Koscheck well after the final beg had rung.

Another UFC on Versus

Another UFC on Versus (the second one, IIRC) is ready to get underway pretty soon.  As always, Dana White has something more to say last minute. Dana White starts off by saying that Jon Jones has a long long way to go before he deserves a title shot, like beating Shogun, Machida, Rampage, and Rashad.  He goes on to say that Yushin Okami has long been due a title shot, and how he is one of the best 185'ers in the world.  Sure Dana, problem is that people actually want to WATCH Jon Jones fight.

Injuries going into UFC 117, UFC 118

Not a good day for injuries it seems, with 2 fighters pulling out from 2 different UFC's.  First, Thiago Silva has pulled out of UFC 117, likely due to a back injury he would rather not disclose.  It has been officially confirmed that Todd Brown will replace him in the fight.  Second, Phil Baroni has pulled out of his fight at UFC 118 due to a minor collarbone injury.  Very disappointed he pulled out of such an important card, with what sounds to be such a recoverable injury.

Lyoto Machida - next fight

Finally have a confirmation of Lyoto Machida's next fight.  Via Lyoto on twitter, "Minha próxima luta está confirmada e será contra Rampage. My next fight is confirmed and it's gg to be against Rampage".  Its just too bad that with this much of a wait, he didn't get a title shot.  It just seems that Shogun got several title shots, until he got the belt, but Machida has to wait, and wait, and wait......

Tito Ortiz vs. Matt Hamill

Come October, Tito Ortiz will be back in action at UFC 121, facing his old friend and student, Matt Hamill.  The betting odds for the fight itself look to be pretty darn one sided, but what about the odds of Tito Ortiz keeping his damn mouth shut and not trash talking Matt?  Oh, wait, pretty much the same odds.

Chael Sonnen talks so much shit, I'm gonna love it when he gets his ass handed to him!

UFC 117 - 2nd Printer-friendly Fight Card

Ok, the 2nd printer-friendly Fight Card for UFC 117 is all done.  It's usually one of my favorites, but the one I use the least.  Nice to see the addition of the nationality flags this time around =)

With any luck, I will do up the printer-friendly fight cards this weekend.  Its nice to have them well in advanced, as long as the card doesn't change too much =)

Strikeforce on Primetime CBS

It looks like Strikeforce is delaying the card that they were announcing earlier this year to be on CBS primetime this September.  Now, it will be on in October sometime.  Last time around, Jake Shields did a great job on the card, but I wonder if they are starting to lack in talent that can keep a major card like that interesting.  A lot of people said that Jake Shields shouldn't have been on that card, because it 'got too technical' for the general public.  But at least Jake Shields shows the general public that despite the gore the people want to see, MMA is about a lot more.

UFC 117 coming up soon

Has anyone taken a look at the fight card for UFC 117 yet?  It looks like the entire main card is featuring a USA fighter against a Brazilian fighter.  We have Anderson Silva, Thiago Alves, Rafael Dos Anjos, Ricardo Almeida, and Junior Dos Santos all from Brazil.  Fighting against them are Chael Sonnen, Jon Fitch, Clay Guida, Matt Hughes, Roy Nelson from the USA.  I'll try and have some printer-friendly fight cards done up in the next week, and maybe include a little flag for country of origin?

Official GSP vs. Koscheck rematch

The UFC has told Josh Koscheck that he will get his rematch against Georges St. Pierre in December.  They will be facing each other on December 11th.  Will this UFC event take place in Canada like originally thought?  It doesn't look like it at this point.

UFC Fan Expo - Boston

I'm glad to see that the UFC Fan Expo in Boston finally released their Exhibitor listing, but even more so they are still adding exhibitors every week.  I still haven't seen Hayabusa on any of the lists, which is one of the companies a lot of us have been waiting for.  Can't imagine why =)

Ken Shamrock - Why does he do it?

For those of you that did not see Ken Shamrock fight at Impact FC 2 this past week, don't watch it.  Ken Shamrock was only there in name, nothing else.  He certainly doesn't fight like the Ken Shamrock everyone wants to remember, he doesnt have the draw, the heart, but he sure does have the honesty.  In the post fight interview, Ken Shamrock said "As long as the fans keep coming, I'll keep getting beat up".  Everyone knows Ken is flat broke, and can't find much other work to promote his name, but why this?  Is it pride, determination to still see fans admire his legacy?

Rich Franklin set for quicker comeback

Rich Franklin recently got some good news from the doctors.  His badly injured arm is healing better than expected, and he will most likely not need surgery for it after all.  Its still unlikely he will be fighting again this year, but it does enable an early 2011 matchup.

Saturday, July 17, 2010

Jake Shields to come to the UFC?

It is still unconfirmed by the UFC, but it looks like Jake Shields will come to the UFC in the 170 pound division.  While it will certainly make for some awesome matchups later on, his first fight in the UFC is slated to be against Martin Kampmann.

Will Fedor aim for a title shot against Overeem?

Originally, Fedor was in talks with Strikeforce for a title shot with Overeem, including a 'championship clause' where he could not leave if he did win the championship.  After that, Fedor's camp was strongly suggesting that Fedor would really prefer a rematch against Werdum.  Now it is coming to light that Werdum will be going in for a much needed surgery on his left elbow, and will likely be out until 2011.  Will Fedor wait until next year for a rematch with Werdum, or will he resume talks with Strikeforce for a titleshot against Overeem?  Strikeforce has said that it is still interested in this matchup.

Lesnar vs. Velasquez - Confirmed

The much anticipated first title defense by Brock Lesnar of the newly reunited title will come at UFC 121.  Dana White announced over the weekend that Brock Lesnar will defend his title against Cain Velasquez on October 23.

Paul Daley with Bellator

Rumor has it that Paul Daley has finalized a deal with Bellator.  In Bellator's usual fashion, they denied that they have an agreement with Paul Daley, but offered no details at all.  Bellator's statement "Paul Daley is not under contract with Bellator" seems like the usual runaround, Bellator trying to hold off on any announcement until they can make it into a full promotional.

UFC Fight Night 22

The rumor mill is working overtime on this one, with much of the card rumored to already be decided, but not exactly written in ink.  Here is what's supposedly already set:

Damian Maia vs. Alan Belcher
Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman
Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau
Cole Miller vs. Ross Pearson
Efrain Escudero vs. John Gunderson
Nick Catone vs. Tomasz Drwal
Jared Hamman vs. Kyle Kingsbury

How long will Shogun Rua be out for?

Unbeknownst to him, Shogun Rua suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during his victory over Lyoto Machida.  So far, he has had three surgeries on that knee, and doctors are not sure if he will need another.  Given the amount of recovery time he will need, it is very likely that he will not fight again until sometime in 2011.  Will the UFC need to issue another interim belt, this time for the Light Heavyweight division?  If so, will anyone serious compete against Lyoto Machida for an interim title?

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Bobby Lashley - So much for 'taking it slow'

Despite Bobby Lashley saying in the past, that he preferred to be in Strikeforce so he could 'taking things slow and gain experience' he is now talking a different tune.  On 'Inside MMA' Lashley talks about wanting to face Fedor in his next matchup.  Yes, Fedor.  He basically says that he is no kid, and needs to face a higher caliper of fighter.  That is certainly one hell of a jump up in caliper alright!

Lesnar vs. Carwin ref Josh Rosenthal

The referee for the big fight, Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin, has finally done a quick interview about his refereeing during that first round:

"He took some hard shots when they were against the fence," Rosenthal said of Lesnar on ESPN's MMA Live. "He was looking for a way out. He was blocking some punches. At one point he tried to spin to push Shane away and took a couple shots. And then again, went for a deep half guard position and took a couple more shots. When he curled up after that is when I commanded him to fight back, which at that point he did, and then he went for feet on the hips to push Carwin away and was able to get to his knees. He pretty much ran with it. He heard -- he responded to my commands."

Maybe now people will pay attention to the actual refereeing, as that was one of the best refereeing in a long time.

David Batista and training in MMA

The latest news on David Batista's new career in MMA is that he is officially training in MMA with Team Cesar Gracie.  So far, Batista has been training in technique with Nate and Nick Diaz, along with Jake Shields.  The more we hear about Batista taking things seriously and training hard, the more we imagine a fight between Batista and Bobby Lashley.

Another rumored addition for UFC 119

A highly likely addition to the card for UFC 119 is Mark Hunt vs. Sean McCorkle.  It looks to be a very interesting matchup, with the Pride veteran Mark Hunt taking on Sean McCorkle, who is still undefeated at 7-0.

UFC 119 - Co-main Event

It's been confirmed today, that the main event for UFC 119 will be Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir in their long awaited rematch.  Not to be outdone, it is assumed that his brother Rogerio will highlight the co-main event against Rampage Jackson, but it has yet to be official announced by the UFC.  More than likely, the UFC will hold off for a little while, to get more people talking about it.

Rumors for the UFC 119 card

So far, sources say these matchups for UFC 119 are all but written in pen:

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Ryan Bader vs. TBA
Chris Lytle vs. TBA
Jeremy Stephens vs. Melvin Guillard
Evan Dunham vs. Sean Sherk
CB Dollaway vs. Joe Doerksen
TJ Grant vs. Julio Paulino
Joey Beltran vs. Matt Mitrione
Looks to be an interesting card already, with Jackson vs. Nog and Lytle, Sherk, and Mitrione on the card as well.

A Title Shot for Fedor?

M-1 Global is now considering giving Fedor, fresh off a loss, a title-shot match against Alistair Overeem.  It may annoy many enthusiasts, but it is pure genius for M-1 Global, who are going to add a 'championship clause' to the contract.  Its a brilliant play by M-1 Global, in that it ensures Fedor has to stay with them if he wins the title, which would almost completely devastate their company.  If Fedor actually loses, it would be 2 huge losses in a row for him, at which point he isn't likely to add much to another organization.

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

M-1 Global in Crisis Mode?

There have been a number of reports lately that M-1 Global, after the huge loss suffered by their biggest star Fedor, is now on the verge of collapsing.  There is virtually no doubt that Fedor's loss has hurt the company's bottom line, but by how much is anyone's guess.  What we do know is that the management of M-1 Global, while simultaneously stating it has nothing to do with Fedor's loss, announced that they are restructuring their company.  Several inside sources say that M-1 Global will be closing several offices, and eliminating up to a dozen positions.

UFC Live on Versus

Less than 1 week prior to UFC 117, there is going to be a UFC Live on Versus fight.  Strangely, its going to be on a Sunday this time, with some interesting fights too.  Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko.  Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami.  Jake Ellenberger vs. John Howard.  Jacob Volkmann vs. Paul Kelly.  Hmmm, does this sound like a card to make up for UFC 112 to anyone else?

The Ultimate Fighter - Season 13

Its looking more and more like Anderson Silva is going to be one of the coaches on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.  The most likely person to be the opposite coach is Demian Maia.  Somehow, this is sounding more and more like a strategy by Dana White to regain a lot of lost ground when it comes to viewers being interested in another Anderson Silva fight.

Monday, July 5, 2010

Should the fight have been stopped?

While most people agree, the ref for the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin fight, Josh Rosenthal, did an excellent job in not stopping the fight too early, some people still disagree.  Some may argue that given that this fight has been hyped and talked about for so long, that the ref was 'encouraged' to keep the fight going, while in a lesser scrutinized fight it would have been stopped.  However, to the ref's credit, Brock covered up very quickly after getting hit repeatedly and covered well on the ground.  Yes, for much of the time in round 1 spent on the ground, Brock wasn't gaining any position or escape, but after the initial barrage of punches, it didn't look like the later punches were doing anywhere as much damage.

UFC 116 Results

Brock Lesnar defeats Shane Carwin by Submission via Arm Triangle in the second round.

Chris Leben defeats Yoshihiro Akiyama by Submission via Triangle Choke in round three.
Stephan Bonnar defeats Krzysztof Soszynski by TKO at 3:08 of round two.

Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin predictions (again)

A lot more of the pros and commentators have been throwing their predictions into the ring, and they do add a few surprises to the mix.  For one, most pros that really have expert knowledge (read:  have had recent fights) stay far away from giving a brief prediction, but others go in depth on who they think will take it.  While the general public may be more or less still split down the middle, commentators and former pros alike mostly give the fight to Brock Lesnar, possibly due to how well he looked at weigh-ins.  Everyone knows that Carwin wants to win by a first round knock-out, but most people realize that Frank Mir, loss or not, proved that it might not be a possibility for Carwin.  With that in mind, will Carwin still have the tools to get it done if/when it goes into the 3rd round and beyond?  Most people seem to be saying Brock may take punishment early on, only to go for the win after the 3rd round opens.

Kurt Pellegrino calling it quits?

Sources are saying that Kurt Pellegrino, sensing the possibilty of another loss at UFC 116 against George Sotiropoulus, will call it quits.  So, if Kurt happens to suffer a loss at UFC 116, expect an announcement declaring his retirement to come shortly after!  Judging by popular opinion, a loss seems fairly likely too.

Frank MIr - Sets his sights on Brock rematch

It appears as if Brock Lesnar's words leading up to UFC 116 have sparked some inspiration in Frank Mir.  Mir has tweeted lately that he has put his plans on going to 205 on hold for a while, so that he can work towards another match with Brock Lesnar.  Is Mir counting on a Brock Lesnar win so he can have another chance at that belt?  Or is Mir just on a suicide mission to even up the score against Brock?

Bumpy road ahead to legalize MMA in New York

Just the other day, a major bill in the Assembly in New York to legalize MMA in New York was shot down:

NYDailyNews.com breaks the unfortunate turn of events:
ALBANY - The push to legalize ultimate fighting in New York is on the ropes. Assembly Democrats stripped approval for the wildly popular violent sport from a budget bill that lawmakers will take up as soon as today.
Gov. Paterson sought to legalize mixed martial arts, saying fights could pull in more than $2 million in tax revenue for the cash-strapped state.
"The majority of voices who spoke about this issue in our conference were not supportive of approving it as part of the budget," said Assemblyman Steven Englebright (D-L.I.), a fight fan. Englebright said it's a long shot the Assembly will revisit the issue. The state Senate has already approved the sport.

While it is not the end of the fight by any means, it will certainly be the most difficult hurdle yet.

Frank Shamrock makes it official

Just wanted to share with you the video of Frank Shamrock announcing his retirement from MMA at Strikeforce.  While its not a big surprise to anyone, it is a sad occasion to lose one of the early greats.

Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin predictions

If you haven't seen it yet, go check out the UFC's website just for this:
http://116.ufc.com/

You'll find you can scroll through the huge number of people who have already made their predictions for the fight right on that website.  Its nice to see the stats and what the people had to say, but the really cool part is making your own prediction.  First you pick which fighter you think will win, then you pick how they will win; by knockout, by stoppage, by submission or by decision.  When you highlight over each choice, it shows a clip of exactly that outcome, in a match played out on the video game UFC Undisputed 2010 !  Pretty interesting to see.

UFC 116 - Secondary fight card

Here's the secondary Fight Card for UFC 116.  I like these a lot, I often have a bad memory, tells you what the past few fights were for a fighter in the top 4 cards.

UFC 116 Printer-friendly Fight Cards

I will try my best and have the printer-friendly fight cards done tomorrow.  I will definately have the main fight card done, and hopefully the second.  I put more effort into doing the second ones, and I find them more useful, but fights change at the last minute so much I try to avoid having to redo them.

More Fedor Fedor Fedor

Guess I was wrong, people AREN't going to stop talking about Fedor and his career.  I don't think this many people would be going on and on about Fedor anywhere this much if Fedor had actually won.  There would be more talk about his undefeated streak, but now almost every article I see is about Fedor.  So, how about we keep some focus on what REALLY matters, the fights?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CPYIdBqukI

Frank Shamrock announced Retirement from MMA

Tonight at Strikeforce Fedor vs. Werdum, Former UFC champion Frank Shamrock announced his retirement from MMA.  Its a  shame about the hard line stance that the UFC has taken about not showing an video footage of Frank Shamrock's career, as it doesn't help solidify his impressive career for the fans that don't remember his early days in Japan and the UFC.

The UFC's first middleweight champ and arguably its biggest star in the late 90s, Shamrock never lost a fight in the Octagon. However, the UFC excluded all of his bouts from fan voting -- even his epic scrap against Tito Ortiz in September 1999 at UFC 24.
In short, Shamrock-Ortiz was one of the UFC's earliest title bouts that felt like a top championship boxing match, given the buildup and drama that made Shamrock's fourth-round TKO his finest -- and final -- performance in the Octagon. Giving up more than 20 pounds after the weigh-in, Shamrock calmly and tactically dissected Ortiz in what stands as a masterpiece of strategy, along with a heady dose of down-and-dirty know-how.
Sadly, the bout won't be featured on the UFC's countdown that has been airing on Spike TV.
"I thought it was a pivotal fight (in MMA)," Shamrock told Sherdog.com. "Physically and mentally, it was a pivotal fight in the history of the sport itself. It's obviously pretty ridiculous and childish they left it out. That's obvious. I was the first-ever champion, and Tito was the first guy in a weight class to work his way up. In my opinion, it was the first real legitimate build-up to a championship fight. It was a real story."

Fedor gets shut down, submitted in first round

On way or another, everyone was bound to still be talking about Fedor long after this match was over.  Unfortunately for Fedor, He lost by submission in tonight's Strikeforce event against Fabricio Werdum in the first round.  No doubt Fedor thought he had his next 2 fights in the bag, to a degree, and would retire undefeated from MMA, but it was not to be.  Werdum just didn't get the level of respect on the ground that he deserved - and it cost Fedor dearly.

Friday, June 25, 2010

How many people are tired of hearing more about Fedor?

What?  All of America?  Really?  It seems like Fedor has been getting a ton of press lately, and not only because of his offhanded comment that he may retire from MMA competely after these next 2 fights that are left on his contract.  Sure, I can totally respect the overwhelming desire to retire undefeated, but what about the rumors of him possible doing a UFC after his contract is up (a rumor that just wont DIE) ? Not to mention the rumor that he would like to go into politics after this.  Hey, if Arnold can swing it, why not?

Personally, I wish the UFC was promoting the move 'Circle of Pain' a whole lot more!

Grapplers Quest

As you know, The UFC Fan Expo is coming to Boston this August.  What I totally missed (my bad) is that every Fan Expo also has a Grapplers Quest event.  Check out the details for this one:

http://www.grapplersquest.com/events/ufc-fan-expo-boston-2010

Has anyone competed in one of these before?  How was the experience, and were the divisions fair?  I am curious as to how often they have these, are they only at UFC Fan Expo's?  If I had realized it and had adequate advanced notice, I would have considered participating.

Keith Jardine is officially cut

I think everyone, including 'The Dean of Mean' himself, sensed that this might be coming.  The Ultimate Fighter Finale marked Keith Jardine's 4th consecutive loss, and made it very likely that he would be cut, no matter how good a fighter people believe him to be.  Almost everyone agrees, Keith Jardine is a great fighter, with impressive wins over the likes of Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin, but his record for the last 7 fights or so has been hit or miss.  In a statement today, Dana White said  "It sucks. I have nothing but respect for him and I hope to see him back soon."

Wanderlei Silva - out for awhile

Wanderlei Silva, who jsut recently pulled out of UFC 116, now reports that he should be able to fight again - in 6 or 7 months. He also says that he was going to fight Akiyama with a torn knee, but the broken ribs were just too much for him.

UFC 116 - coming up Sat. July 3

Many people are excited about UFC 116, which is coming up in a week from Saturday, on July 3. And with good reason, as there are some great fights on this card, but there are some changes already as well.

Wanderlei Silva, who was scheduled to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama, is no longer fighting due to some broken ribs suffered during training. Latest sources say that Chris Leben is going to fill the spot. Looks to still be an interesting fight!

And the drama continues, as James Toney releases a joke/fake 911 call about Randy Couture, titled "Randy Couture, I'mma Beatcho Ass". Almost something we would expect from Brock Lesnar, at least in his WWE days.

Anderson Silva traing with Who???

Lately sources have been saying that Anderson Silva has been training with somebody new, and quite unexpected. Steven Seagal. Yup, you heard that right, Anderson Silva has been training in Aikido with Steven Seagal. This could certainly make his next fight against Chael Sonnen a lot more interesting. Or, quite possibly the most BORING MMA fight ever. Check out the video on YouTube, link below:

David Batista - Yet another WWE star going to MMA

If recent reports are at all correct, David Batista (you remember him, Bastista, from the WWE) has already been training in MMA, although details about how long he has been training are very sketchy at best. What does seem to be certain is that Batista has claimed he has already signed on with Strikeforce, and they have already set up his first match, though no one is breathing a word about who. Go ahead and check out the video:

Matt Hamill - Victory

Did anyone else see that big red spot on Matt Hamill's back during his fight at The Ultimate Fighter Finale? Can anyone say staph infection? Yup, he fought despite knowing ahead of time about that nasty staph infection. And during the first round, he was down to fighting with a broken hand, too. And yet he still pulled out the win over Keith Jardine. I'm not sure if that's a testament to his mindset, or a testament to how badly Keith Jardine has been doing. Anyways, he also walked away with the $25,000 Fight of the Night bonus. Not bad...

Dana White - I will make up for UFC 112!

Dana White Working On “Huge Fight” On Free TV After UFC 112 Debacle
Written by Tim Ngo
June 18th, 2010

After watching one of the strangest main events ever at UFC 112, Dana White promised to make it up to fans who shelled out as much as $54.95 to watch middleweight champ Anderson Silva “coast” to victory

Silva had dominated the first 2Rounds against his challenger, Demian Maia, and then proceeded to berate his opponent and stop fighting at the same time.

White was so disgusted with what was transpiring that he actually left his seat and handed the title to Silva’s manager, Ed Soares.

Now it appears that White is working on his plan to make it up to those who witnessed what happened in Abu Dhabi.

“What I’m going to end up doing is probably taking a big, huge fight that should have been on pay-per-view and put it on free TV. I’m actually working on it right now,” White told MMAWeekly.

Nobody has any clue as to what White may have in store but it’s rare that the boss has let down the masses of fans that follow his sport religiously.

“I said I’d make up for that, and trust me, I’m gonna,” he once again reiterated.

Chuck Liddell - uncertain future

There's no arguing that Chuck Liddell looked like he was in rare form in his fight at UFC 115, however it did not guarantee him victory. Most people agree that he 'just got caught', but where does he go from here? Will Dana White allow him back into the UFC at some point in the future? If not, will Chuck go and fight in another organization? What's your opinion?

UFC 115 odds

I am going to be posting the printer-friendly fight cards either Monday or Tuesday. To hold you over until then, why not check out the early betting odds for 3 of the fights at UFC 115?

Chuck Liddell(+115) vs. Rich Franklin(-145)
Mirko Cro Cop(+120) vs. Pat Barry(-150)
Mac Danzig(-120) vs. Matt Wiman(-110)

I expect things to start shifting big time in the next few days, especially for the Liddell vs. Franklin fight!

UFC 115

UFC 115 is coming up soon, on Saturday June 12. It's still a week away, so I still have some time to finish up the fight cards for it, but I wanted to give you an early rundown on what the card looks like for far:

Chuck Liddell vs. Rich Franklin
Mirko Cro Cop vs. Pat Barry
Paulo Thiago vs. Martin Kampmann
Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel
Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald
Tyson Griffin vs. Evan Dunham
Mac Danzig vs. Matt Wiman
David Loiseau vs. Mario Miranda
James Wilks vs. Peter Sobotta
Ricardo Funch vs. Claude Patrick
Mike Pyle vs. Jesse Lennox

Sadly, I was hoping for some bigger name on this card. I guess I've been spoiled the past couple UFC's =) Sure, I'd love to see Chuck fight, and Cro Cop as well, but I could live without seeing Paulo Thiago fight. Plus, I would have expected them to be paired up with better opponents.

On the plus side, this UFC is once again going to be aired in movie theaters all over the place. There still doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why they show a couple in theaters but not others..

Shogun vs. Machida - any time soon??

There has been a lot of talk lately that the next person Rampage will face as he 'eases' back into the ring and shakes off the cobwebs, is Lyoto Machida. Really? You've got to be kidding!! Shogun Rua fights Machida, loses by decision, and gets a blindingly fast rematch. Why? Its all about the hype, the fight got everyone talking that Shogun should have won. Machida, during the rematch, eats a lucky punch early on, and isnt able to recover quickly enough. Hands down, Machida deserves a quick rematch, just like Shogun got.
But, as we all know, the UFC is all about publicity, and fights that get people upset have the most!

StrikeForce 24

I completely forgot about Strikeforce 24!  I knew it was coming up, by since I don't get Showtime right now, it never occurred to me it was this Saturday!  As far as I know, the next StrikeForce that will be on CBS is going to be in the fall.  I was really hoping that Strikeforce 24 would have Bobby Lashley on the card, but alas it looks like that will be in June for Strikeforce 25.

So... what were your favorite fights for StrikeForce 24?

How effective will Machida be against RUA this time around?

Coming up on May 8, Lyoto Machida will be facing Shogun Rua, yet again, at UFC 113. We all know how the fight went last time, with many people thinking Rua had it in the bag, but Machida walking away with the victory. But what exactly will Machida do differently this time around? It certainly looked like Rua had scored some points with the judges with numerous leg kicks, but they did not look like they did much damage. Will Machida keep taking the leg kicks, hoping to get more of an opening for striking? Or will he attempt to counter and take the fight to the ground more? One thing is for certain, I don't think either fighter will let up until they have an Undisputed victory!
